$8 million WV lab expansion to be chopped? THE PRESS SECRETARY to Fisheries and Oceans Minister John Fraser has been quoted as saying the planned $8 million modernization and expansion of the fisheries laboratory in West Vancouver will be cut from federal spen- ding plans. The report carried in a Vancouver daily on the weekend, which the News could not confirm to deadline, says that the ex- pnasion project’ will be among $18.1 million in projects that were sched- uled that will be deferred The previous Liberal federal government had announced the West Van- cOuver project earher this year. Specifics of the Fisheries and Oceans cuts, expected to hit fish stock enhance- ment programs on_ the West and East Coasts were scheduled to be announced this week as part of the federal government’s cost- cutting that began with fi- nance munister Michael Wilson's economic - state- ment last Thursday. Among measures Wilson announced was the defer- ral of a number of capital programs put in place by the Liberal government. SKI OPERATION Specifics were not spelled Out, nor was it indicated how long the projects will be deferred. The announcement earlier this year that the $8 milhon project had been approved for the fisheries laboratories, now housed in trailers and aging buildings at Tidley Cove, was met with approval by fisheries staff and members of West Vancouver municipal council. Council was particularly pleased when members were able to convince the federal government to remove the trailers trom the sea-side site as part of the upgrading program Deal struck for vit.
