Outstanding food, impeccable service

INTERNATIONAL Plaza Hotel at

Capilano and Marine Drive in North Van-
couver is widely known for the big name
shows it brings to its Plazazz lounge.

But located just off to the
side of the show lounge ts the
Heritage dining room —
which is possibly the finest,

yet. somewhat expensive,
restaurant on the North
Shore.

My wife and | have been
frequenting the Heritage
Room on special occasions
for years. The service is im-
peccable and the food
outstanding.

Last Saturday night was no
exception. We were joined by
a couple of good friends who
were also into an evening of
fine dining.

When we arrived we were
cordially met by longtime
maitre d’ Spyros Vassiliou
and escorted to our table. He
briefly outlined the change in
the menu that had recently
taken place and pointed out
some new wines that have
been added to the wine list.

Within a half hour the
place was filled to capacity. It
seems many people were tak-
ing advantage of the hotel
special which offers dinner
for two for $35 (soup and
salad and a choice from three
entrees)

To begin, we ordered the
champignons farcie (baked
mushroom caps filled with
crabmeat, shrimp and melted
cheese — $4.95), the shrimp
bisque ($2.95) and the salade
maison ($3.50). Each item
was delicious. We only wish
we had room to try more of
the pre-dinner creations that
range in price from $2.35 to
$6.50.

Our choice of wine to ac-
company the appetizers was
the Paul Masson Emerald dry
from Califorma ($12.75).

The main courses are
divided into four categories
— sea and stream
($14.95-$23.95), farm and
ranch ($13.95-$15.95), from
the broiler ($15.95-$17.95)
and gourmet treats ($15.95
for the rack of lamb = di-
jonaisse to $36.00 for the
chateaubriand montmireil
for two). All meals come with
fresh vegetables, potatoes

and tresh bread

All of the meals were cook-
ed to perfection. | especially
enjoyed the final preparation
of the chateaubriand being
done at our table.

After dinner we relaxed,
enjoyed dessert, coffee and
an after dinner drink. And,
as Our conversation began to
focus on Our evening’s ex-
perience, we all agreed that
the atmosphere 1s subdued

yet somewhat elegant, the
staff smartly attired, the ser-
vice formal! and efficient and
the food, both in presenta-
tion and quality, excellent.

The Heritagé Room is a
definite yes on a list of places
you must try whether to take
advantage of the hotel dinner
special for two ($35), or to
splurge on that. special
occasion.

The bill for the four of us,
including drinks and wine,
was $138.
