IN AN EFFORT to educate others, Margaret and
Ray Steffich are publicly talking about how they

lost their son to the Moonies.

At a meeting at St.
Anthony’s Church in West
Vancouver last week, the
couple told the
predominantly Catholic
audience that cults like the
Moonies are a people pro-
blem that affect all religions.

The couple maintains that
through education, informed
people will be less likely to
fall for the deceitful prac-
tises the group uses to entice
new members.

Margaret and Ray
described their son Michael
as being a top scholar and
athlete, a happy, easy-going
young man.

After graduating from
Notordame highschool in
Vancouver, Michael received
a four-year scholarship,
which he took to the Un.
versity of Hawan After a
year he decided he needed a
change and came home. He
went to UBC, worked,
travelled, went to Cap Col-
lege and decided Los
Angeles was the next place
he would visit

24-year-old boy, we thought
that was unusual. He said he
met this family, and we
would really like them. He
was supposed to come home
while Ray and | went to
Europe to look after the
other kids, but he said he
wanted to stay longer.”’

That was in May. In

September the Steffichs
celebrated their 25th
anniversary, and Michael
came home to visit. ‘‘He

didn’t look like the Michael
we knew. He had no beard,
no long hair and no
moustache. He was very
different. He said he was
working with the volunteer
Creative Community
Projects, carpet cleaning. He
makes money, he said, but
gives it right back to the
project.

So Michael returned to
San Fransisco. But soon
phoned and told his parents
he wanted them to ‘‘come
and see what I’m into."’

Before they left, an oid
girtfriend of Michaels told
the Steffichs that) Michael
said he was tn the Moonites,
but asked her not to tell
