IF ANYONE’S pointing fingers, the paying public
and the media can take most of the credit for the

firing of Vic Rapp.

When a sports
organization has to sell seats
and keep those seats happy,
then it is no longer a
question of whether a coach
will be fired, but when, for
the moment things go
wrong, the public will howl
for blood.

easier to fire the coach than
fire the team.”

Professional sport is not
the sort of business one
enters and then asks what
the pension plan is like. It’s
short term, filled with
moments of elation and
moments of despair and it
usually ends on the despair
side. It's simply the nature of
the beast.

And it doesn't matter one
tiny little bit if the public and
the media knows anything
about the sport or not. If
they pay the piper, they call
the tune. It has to be‘one of
the most difficult things to
understand or accept in
professional sport.

When things don’t go as
the paying customer thinks
they should, then a sacrifice
is demanded and until that
sacrifice is made there will
be no rest among
natives.

And it doesn’t necessarily
mean that the right victim be
sacrificed; just so long as
somebody's blood is spilled
to ‘appease the masses ...

SOMETIMES ONE wonders
whether minor minds mind
minor hockey. While that's
not totally fair because of
the hundreds of concemed
adults involved in the
programs, it is frustrating to
see, with frightening

problems cropping up again
and again.

Does anyone really care if
girls are playing hockey with
the boys at the younger
levels? Is it really going to
shake the foundations of the

someone in charge of these
organizations who is willing
to run the program for the
kids and who can realize that
rules and regulations will
never take the place of

Norma Brewer, a youth
soccer referee in West Van
kindly informing me _ that
there-are not only “men in
black” as I recently said, but
women and girls also.

She's right of course, and
all I can say is that the
female members must be
doing a great job because
the sign of a good official is if
no One notices them.

But I do apologize for not
mentioning the ladies along
with the men for the great
job they're doing.
