A7 - Sunday, May 16, 1982 - North Shore News ERE rn ail bo co x RE aa Global suicide: we can at least write letters to try to avert it Dear Editor: As a mother I'm writing in support of Manan Shipley’s excellent Mother's Day letter — N.S, News, May 9 — and in doing so I'd like to thank very much all the many people who cared enough for the Ife of our planet to sign the World Disarmament Campaign pettons that have been placed in) vanous Dun- darave/ Ambleside locations for the last month. These petiuons, together with similar ones from all over the world, have now been sent to New York in time for the 2nd U.N. Special session on Disarmament in June. Let us pray that the obvious public concern conveyed will move the world leaders to act positively for peace and especially for Prime Minister Trudeau to reinforce his 1978 strategy to suffocate the Arms Race and to halt the testing of the lethal Cruise Missile in Alberta. With Marion Shipley and Hayden Stewart (N.S. News, Apnil 14) I urge all readers who haven't done so yet to write to the government. Glona Charles West Vancouver Thanks, strangers Dear Editor: On Saturday, May 8, while walking the seawall at 22nd, my husband took ul and could walk no farther. I wish to convey thanks to the young man and his girl fnend who very quickly dashed off and called the ambulance. In my upset state I neglected to ask his name. He was very concerned and most kind to us. We are most grateful. Many thanks to the am- bulance attendants as well. Given that rape is one of the fastest growing crimes in North Amenca, and that, ac- cording to the Globe and Mail, sexual abuse of daughters by their own fathers is reaching epidemic proportions, and given that the human being is an imitative animal, and that 85% of porno customers are male, one wonders at any achon that might encourage that percentage of the male population who rape. How odd, too, to read that store manager Ted Emery is assunng the public that his store will not be “getting into the real senous bondage or torture stuff.” Does this mean his store will only be getting into the not-so- senous bondage or torture stuff? And who voted Mr. Emery the arbiter of community standards in the first place? Since por- nography is directed against women, it might have been a good idea if Mr. Emery, and City council, had asked the women of the North Shore how they feel about any marketing of goods which might be detnmental to women’s safety. Many women, including myself, would not deny the nght of any person to watch whatever he or she wishes in the privacy of their own home. What does concem us, however, in these days of rising violence against women, is that grey area of what occurs after the movie has been shown, and what action may be taken by that unstable person who has been sexually stimulated — yet offered no release for his stimulation. One remembers that Rape Relief estimates that there is a rape in Canada every twenty-nine minutes (every seventeen minutes in the U.S.). that three out of ten little girls will be sexually assaulted by a male family member, and that today, one woman in every four will be sexually assaulted at some time in her life. These are hornfying statistics, which say a great deal about our society. It is also strange to note that, as msing numbers of women distnguish them- selves more and more in the fields of medicine, politics, industry and the law. so there seems to be a missing defensive rearguard reaction which imsists on promulgating the old idea of woman as sexual artifact first, human being last. It is also interesting to learn that, according to recent seminars on pornography, held at Capilano College and North Vancouver Public Library, 80% of all pornography production ts in the hands of three Mafia families based in New York. Managers of hardcore porn outlets, and the councils that grant them their hcences, might like to think about that.
