In New York NEW YORK (UPI) - Bandits struck a dozen banks in New York City Thursday, setting a record for bank robberies in one month, and escaped with more than $140,000. ‘Only one suspect was nabbed in the latest day-long spree of bank robberies that raised the number of August heists to 135 and brought the total for the year to 604, compared to 632 for all of 1978. The previous one month record was 125 bank rob- beries - set in July. Before this summer's rash of bank robberies, the record number for any month was 84, set in August 1978. The 12 banks robbed in three of the five boroughs Thursday included a $100,000 airport bank branch heist, a $40,000 savings bank burglary, seven other robberies and three attempted holdups. Police said they had no explanation for the sudden increase in bank holdups. As the latest flurry of robberies were being tallied in Police Headquarters, about 30 volunteer detec- tives were wrapping up their intensive week-long training for the city’s bank robbery task force. draw were: prizes) were: Were you lucky?.
