(Courtesy of the Craven Foundation) _ he magnificent Marmon Howard Marmon’s first cars were highly advanced, with air-cooled V-4 engines of oversquare dimensions, mechanically-operated ove- rhead valves, and pressure lubrication. He achieved a kind of independent front suspension by using double- three-point suspension, with a separate subframe for engine and transmission. Only his two-speed planetary transmission was in line with current American standards. These cars lasted until introduced, featuring an aluminum cylinder block, body, hood and_ radiator shell. It boasted 340 ci. and 74 bhp, and remained - in stock until 1927, acquiring Delco coil ignition in 1920, and optional front wheel brakes in 1923: Marmons were expensive; $5,000 for a 1921 touring car. An unsuccessful 189 ci. ohv straight-8 appeared ‘in 1927, but the following year only eights were made, the cheapest L-head 68 priced at . than $1,000. This model name, however, appeared in the 1930 catalogue as the Marmon R, along with three other eights: the L-head 69, and two big ohv cars with four-speed transmissions and displacements of 21Y ci and 303 ci. One of the last Marmons was the finest: the magnificent 491 ci. 200 bhp 16-cylinder model of 1931. It was beautifully propor- tioned, and had an alloy engine. The list price was $4,925. In 1908 buyers could choose air or water cooling, and cylinder heads were detachable. The following year Marmon switched to con- ventional T-head in-line fours rated at 40/45 hp and 50/60 hp, and two years latet only the 318 ci. model 32, with rear-axle transmission was listed. Marmons did well in competition, logging fifty- four Ist places between 1909 and 1912. Ray Harroun won the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911 with a specially-built six cylinder car, the Wasp. An enormous 572 ci. six rated at 48 hp was available in 1914. The company sold 22,300 cars in 1929, thanks to the Roosevelt, a new straight-8 that sold for less 1933.
