other hand WHEN A govern- ment specifically removes the right to freedom of speech, you might think that the media and the main opposition party would create hell about it, espe- cially whea an elec- tion is pending. It was three years ago that the socialists made it possible to go after the polit- ically incorrect — meaning me — with Bill 33. But for ali we’ve heard about from Gordon Campbell and his Liberals it might have been a piece of cold toast. He has never raised the subject. And when Charles Maclean asked Liberal MLA Gary Farrell-Collins about it on his AM1040 show, the MLA waffled. He said the caucus had not discussed it. I decided to ask Campbell about it myself and informed his staff accordingly. The great man avoided me. I tried again. Still no dice. Eventually, however, Sonja Sanguinetti came on the line. She is the president of the B.C. Liberal Party. She claimed Campbell was busy and that he was doing 2 jot of travelling. I said I would take up no more than two minutes of his time. Nothing doing. But that very same day Campbell wasn’t travelling. He was in Vancouver and appeared for an hour on a CBC show. Clearly, he didn’t want to be put on the spot. Since Campbell was play- ing the phantom of the opera T asked Sanguinetti what the Liberal position was. She said they were opposed to it, LONSDALE QUAY NORTH VANCOUVER 988-6321 - | DRAPERIES BY §, LA & SON CUusTom $16.88 Hined.. CUSTOM VALANCES & BLINDS | At tow, low prices. End of conversation. I think [| know what is going on here. When the Liberals fought against Bill 33 night und day for the best part of a week, Campbell wasn't in the leg- islature. The party was led by Gordon Wilson. And although Wilson made it clear he didn't approve of my subversive writings, he nevertheless waxed eloquent on the subject of a free press. Are we saying, he asked, that we should legislate against the right of Doug Collins to write his column? An unidentified MLA called out: “Yes. That's what they want.” During the debate it rid (or The West Vancouver Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas E. # Baillie to the position of Secre- far) tary to the Bord of Directors. - B Mr. Baillie has been a Director of the Foundation since 1995. pee Mr, Baillie is a partner in Bd Thomas E. And that's where Campbell comes in again. As we all know, he replaced Wilson. As we also know, he is falling over backwards to attract the eth- nic vote. When he was nomi- nated as the candidate for Vancouver: Quilchena, there were turbans in the offing. And so far he has four Chinese candidates running for the Liberals. T suspect he is getting support trom the ethnic wheeler dealers. And he still refuses to say who funded him when he ran for the party leadership. Another smail sign: the Chinese Benevolent Society has contributed $2,000 to the fund the CJC is raising to defend Bill 33 when the NDP Thought Police calla human rights tribunal against the News and me. So a pat- tern emerges. With an election in the offing the Liberals are hiding. “Hoonlight Madness May 8/96 7:00 - 9:00 pm Beat the G.S.T. Ps Shimano STAVAlnO doratiours 21 Spd. Wednesday, May 8, 1996 - North Shore News — 7 iiSssions under the blanket with regard to the worst piece of legislation of its kind since the Alberta Press Act was killed by thie Supreme Court in 1938. Campbell is anyone’s man. First he is the plaid shirts’ man, then the men-in- suits’ man. It wouldn’t sur- prise me if he turned up one night wearing a yarmulke. Only one party is firmly committed to ditching Bill 33, and that’s the Reformers under Jack Weisgerber. Meanwhile, good news from Alberta. The govern- ment wants to make people who lay frivolous human rights complaints pay the costs of lega! fees. Predictably, the move is opposed by the usual crowd, plus the United Church. What is really needed is legislation to wipe out all human rights commissions. But I'm not holding my breath. everyone who made my birthday so special. .
