If you're going to see this for
Robin Williams, be prepared.’

He’s only on screen for a third
of the movie and as the title hints,
this isn’t a comedy.

In a restrained performance,
Williams plays John Keating, a
passionate English teacher trying
to insti! a zest for living and free

thinking in his students. But the
trouble is, it’s 1959 Vermont and
he’s in Welton Academy, a prep
school that proudly trumpets
tradition, honor, discipline and
excellence as its principles.
Inspired by Keating, seven of his
pupils resurrect a club that he had
initiated in his college days. The
Dead Poets Seciety meet for late
night readings of the
“heavyweights,” Keats and
Whitman, and generally follow
their teacher’s credo, “carpe
diem’’ (roughly translated: Go for

it).
But the stuffy headmaster (Nor-
man Lloyd) and the boys’ parents
demand an end to this ‘‘de-
fiance,"’ which leads to the in-
evitable tragic turn. That's right, a
dead poet in zhe middle of the
term.

The acting’s good and tastefully
filmed, but it’s all cribbed from the
teacher guru movies of 20 years
ago (To Sir, With Love, The Prime
of Miss Jean Brodie, Up the Dawn
Staircase). And the parents — well,
let’s just say one of Welton’s

enrolment prerequisites is having 2
dysfunctional family.

Williams’ performance, howev-
er, pushes this from a D grade toa
