At least that’s the way people saw it Tuesday night at the Park Royal Hotel’s public open house informa- tion session. The owners have applied to the district for permits :0 redevelop the +43-year-oid establishment from the ground up. The project as proposed is worth about $30 miilion. Approximately 40 people stopped by to see the hotel’s new development _ plans. While = some attendees approached the news with quiet reserve, most of the vis- itors tiked what they saw. Architect Barry Downs, owner representative Gregg Holubitsky and independent consultant-planner Bob Heaslip were all on hand to provide explanations for the drawings, models and design ideas. If approved, the old 30- room, 20,000 sq. ft. (1,858 sq. m) facility will be trans- formed into a new 76,000 sq. ft. (7,060 sq. m) “boutique hotel” with 99 guest suites, a 100-seat restaurant and a 110-seat lounge and pub. A new 150-seat banquet facility and boardroom for 20 are also included in the plans. The pro sal calls for a “step-up” design which will fully utilize the hotel’s cur- rent commercial location. According to plans, the outermost sections of the’ new building will be only two ’ storeys high. It’ will thea ‘step-up in increments to four, and then six’ storeys at the intersection of Clyde Avenue and 6th. 310-CaPFS 227 or 720 Marine Dr, North Van North Shore owned & ope iF you have been injured i in an auto accident Call Stephen Anderson 922-8881 » SAGER: ANDERSON LAWRENCE Barristers -8¢ Solicitors 235-1 5th Street, West Vancouver THE new Park Royal Hotel would incorporate a “step- up” design. This lot is currently owned by the dis- trict. “It’s beautiful,” said Heidi Neff, a regular hotel and restaurant patron. “I like the care they’re taking with the landscaping. [I'm really impressed.” Environmental — surveys and traffic studies have already been commissioned. Early reports indicate that the trees and gardens will remain largely intact. “I think the hotel is great,” said businessman Robert Richmond as he looked at a model on the table. Richmond said he can’t wait for the new hotel because he and his clients need this kind of service: . Guests also had the opportunity to fill out com- ment forms and leave their suggestions. But aside from the odd nostalgic sentiment, all of the forms read {ike let- ters of encouragement. “I think (the reaction) has been very faveurable,” said project architect Downs. Even traffic issues have been = addressed early. Consultant Harry Thompson was there in person to assure residents that there would be no significant increase in traf- ie. During rush hour, Thompson said there would only be about 20 more cars in the area. “The (provincial) Ministry had no objections to this,” he said. The hotel plans to held more public seminars in the near future. There will also be an offi- cial public hearing held by West Vancouver District as - part of the development application procedure. If approved, construction could start as carly as spring 2001. All partners would like to sec completion of the project by spring 2002.
