Crosby said the issue had been raised with the munici- pality several times since 1995. He challenged the asser- tion made by municipal Director of Operations Colin Wright that a four-way stop was not needed because the volume of traffic was not _ high enough. Wright said in a memo to . Coun. Allan Williams that his staff had spent two hours, between 2:30-4:30 p.m., ” assessing traffic levels at the intersection and: found it to . be. only 75% of the volume required for a’four-way stop. °: But Crosby said the worst time of day for speeding traf- "fic was in fact early morning, when commuters were trav- elling down 22nd Sc. from the | & per Levels Highway. : you torture’ your sta- tistics enough, you can make them say anything,” Crosby observed. “I. don’t believe council needs an accident to “take action.” “. The schoo! is pushing West Vancouver council for 2 tour-way stop at the corner. Cynthia Rivet. Rivet, along with school principal Jennifer Anderson, has been keeping a watchful eye over the crossing before and after school. 5 ‘Rivet said that as the only French immersion clemen- tary school in West Vancouver, Pauline Johnson had a higher percentage of students driven in by parents each day, In a letter to council, Anderson said vehicles trav- elling downhill on 22nd St. often exceeded the posted 50 km/h speed limit. “These vehicles travel cight blocks downhill with- out any stops,” she said, “and continue past our school until they reach Marine Drive. I have person- ally witnessed “many, many speeding vehicles in this area which in my opinion put our students at risk.” Council recommended the issue be referred to the General Services Committee. Coun. Ken Haycock also rec- ommended that Mayor Ron Wood Sook into the possibili- ty of police-trained student crossing guards. Said Wright, “We are all looking to find ways of improving safety. All input will be evaluated and a rec- ommendation will be made by the committee to council. No possible solution which may improve safety is exclud- ed from consideration.” ‘Easter Week -—DEADLINES— ISSUE DATE - ‘Wednesday, ‘April 19 DISPLAY BOOKING DEADLINE CLASSIFIED BOOKING DEADLINE Fri.
