Lion’s Gate Hospital has evolved a unique one-to-one volunteer visitors training program, wherein a person who Cares, can learn to put his gifts to work in a caring relationship. Being old can be, and often is, a lonely and frustrating experience for many of our senior citizens. Some have lost their family and friends. Suddenly, overnight, it seems the older person is alone, cut off from those he knew. Then our older citizens may feel out of place as he : no longer fits into the life of the younger people around i If a_ disability or sickness happens to him, he finds that he can no longer. - carry out the most routine functions. He may be permanently impaired in some physical way for the rest of his life. He finds that he must now depend largely on other persons for all the things he used to do for himself. No person likes the thought of being dependent upon others for the basics of life, yet it is a tragic fact of life. As the numbers of older, dependent persons increase, the need for understanding, loving care and compassionate helping people grows too -- persons who can see the need of our older citizens and respond in a caring way to that need. New life and new hope can come thraugh a_ caring relationship. This fall a four week training course for such volunteers is being offered PATIENTS LIKE OLIVER (in wheelchair) enjoy much appreciated support from volunteers like the three in the centre of the group — Diane McTavish, George Wilson and Fred Talley.
