* B10 - Wedmesday, Sept. 2, 1981 - North Shore News Young runners set records To anybody who has been watching the young North Shore track and field athictes in competition this year it should come as no surprise that they set two meet records and picked up a healthy collection of medals. While Graeme Bowbrick knocked over 15 seconds off the 3000 metre mark to take the gold in a time of 9:09.1, Janice Bain of Lions Bay took over four seconds off the mark in the girls division of the same event. Bain took the gold in a time of 10:27 8. Bain als} won the gold in the 1500 metre event, while Bowbrick had to settle for a bronze in his 1500 metre race. at ; ; Mike ‘captured three medals for Zone 5 at the games. The 15-year-old came first in the long jump, 4 Swimmers fare but was-beaten in the 100m where he was favored, and took the bronze. As the North Shore was not a independent zone, (Zone 5 also consisted of much of Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, and Squamish) its athietes also contributed to teams made up from the entire zone. Susan Carlile for example, played on the women’s field hockey team that captured the gold medal, and the West Vancouver athicte contributed onc goal in the team’s 4-2 victory over Zonc 1, on the way to. the championship. While it was the medal winning that stood out, there were a number of ncar-miss fourth place performances, by competitors such as the pins softball tcam, aumerous swimmers and West sailor Max Foxall. Aad then there were some sports, such as synchronized swimming and the cquestnan cvents, in which the North Shore athictes were hopclessly outclassed. But they came and competed anyway, ang by all accounts scemed to have a really good time - which, shall we be tntc. ss what it was all about. From archery to water skiing, North Shore athictes won a numbcr of medals at the B.C Summer Games Here. cxchoding trach and field and oncntcenng are o last of those mcdats Van ARCHERY Ladtcs berc bow.
