At a public hearing on whether service stations con- structed atter June 1, 1998 be forced to provide at ‘least onc full-service pump, representa- tives from Chevron Canada, the Canadian Petroleum Product Institute and focal station owners voiced their displeasure. “I've been in the business for 13 years and I pride myself on providing full-pump ser- vice and everything that gocs with it to my customers,” said Russell Howard, franchise owner of North Vancouver Mohawk. “If my future competitors are regulated to having these full-service pumps it could affect my business down the road. | would prefer that ser vice stations have the oppor: tunity to provide fiall-service on a voluntary basis rather than have it regulated.” Judy Wish representing the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute pointed out that ina recent survey compiled by the institute, three out of four respondents said they pre- ferred a self-service pump rather than using the full-ser- vice pump option. “People want to get out quickly and getting gas is not high on the list of enjoyable tasks that have to be done on a daily basis,” Wish said. “Having the ability to pro- vide the option is a great idea, but it would be best if the Storewide savings on selected _— Hurry in for best selection. Council voted 4-2 in favor with Coun. Perrault and Coun. Fearnley opposed. “We are living in an area with an aging population and we need to provide more full- service options for the public in the future,” said Coun. Darrell Mussatto. “Among our present pop- ulation more than 40% have disabilities and enjoy the idea of not having to pump their own gas.
