TOE-chopping
nihilists, Maude the
militant feminist artist,
and a mysterious
stranger with a handle-
bar moustache — we’re
not in Farge anymore.

The Coen brothers’ latest
film The Biq Lebowski stars
Jeff Bridges as Jeff “The
Dede” Lebowski, who, ina
classic case of mistaken iden-
tity, finds himself entangled
iz: a would-be kidnapping
plot.

The story puts a modern
spin on the classic missing-
girl, bag-of-ransom-money,
private-cye-solves-the-case
plotline, and The Dude, a
laid-back sleuth for the ‘90s,
is the unlikely hero.

. « Fora man whose motto
could be “bowling, drugs
and more bowling,” life gets
really busy when The Dude

is mistaken for a millionaire
with the same name and ucts
his rug trashed by thugs.

What follows is not so
much a riveting story as
insight inte rhe tiny world
occupied by The Dude and
his bowling baddies Walter
and Donny (Joha Goodman
and Steve Buscemi} and how
simple men make simpi¢
things a whole lot more
complicated.

The Dude can’t get
through the day without a
joint or a white Russian.
Walter can’t finish a sen-
tence without bringing up
Vietnam. Donny can’t get a
word in edgewise. Bur
together they are one of the
most feared bowling teams
in the league, and in their
world that's all that really
matters.

The cast is excellent, fea-
turing some Coen film regu-
lars John Turturro,
Goodman, Buscemi), new-
comers (Julianne Moore is
deliciously detached as

In their quest for quirki-
ness, however, screenwriters
Joel and Ethan Coen go
overboard. While the Coen
trademark scene-stealing
minor characters (think
Marge’s high school friend
in Fargo) are well done,
there are just too many in
The Big Lebowsky. The head
wound-induced dream
sequences are original —
particularly a sequence in
which The Dude is flattened
by a giant bowling ball and
transported down the alley
— but the novelty wears
thin after che second or
third.

The Big Lebowsky isn’t as
dark as other Coen tilms,
which will disappoint dig-
hard fans. Buc for those who
like watching che tribula-
tions of an anti-hero, a good
laugh and bowling, this film
is right up their alley.
