By Martin Mitlerchip Contributing Writer NORTH Vancouver District Council unani- mously endorsed pro- ceeding with Phase 2 of its Waterfront Task Force Report recently. The task force was suggest- ed by Coun, Ernie Crist in 1994 as a way of developing long-term strategies for pro- tecting and increasing public access to the Deep Cove- Dollarton waterfront. - The task force took almost as long to set up as it did to j complete its in-depth public # consultation process. Ultimately, its 20-plus membership comprised repre- sentation from district staff, community and ratepayer associations, environmental groups and developers. a Its $29,000 Phase 2 report was presented to council in . j June 1995, | That report contained in J its many. recommendations ‘the suggestions that the Noble ‘Towing/McKenzie Barge site B be“retained as industrial land and that there be no medium Mor high density redevelopment of che waterfront. - Council has since amended f-both .recommeridations in split decisions and a contro- versial 137-unit apartment and condominium proposal for the Dollarton waterfront goes to public hearing Sep. 24. Phase 2 of the task force’s process will involve develop- ment of specific options and plans for its previously devel- oped strategy, Crist said Monday that the Phase 1 report without the specifics of Phase 2 had put council in “a very disadvan- taged situation.” “We have motherhood statements about the water- front... but are dancing around the mulberry bush again and again when it comes to specifics,” said Crist. Coun. Pam Goldsmith- Jones made no apologies for the “breather” between phas- es and said the district was “leading the way” compared to Vancouver City which has no waterfront — planning process under way. “Pm hopeful that those who participated the first time will hang in’ there,” said Goldsmith-Jones. Glenys — Deering-Robb, who chaired the task force, told the News she was “delighted it looks. like they are going ahead,” and said she ‘would “consider” continuing to chair the commitice. FREE N.
