me OL aldiwE LANE f ewe Graphic Dorothy Foster THE PRINCE George, built in 1948, is docked at Britannia Beach. HOW MANY times have you driven along the Sea to Sky Highway, en route to Squamish or Whistler, and seen the former cruise ship, the Prince George, docked idly at Britannia Beach? NORTH SHORE HERITAGE By Dorothy Foster. . Spots of rust are showing and it has ‘been sitting there for about four years. When it was built 46 years ago at Yarrows, Esquimalt, it was the largest. commercial vessel built-in ‘Canada. It was built as a cruise ship for the Canadian National Line. Many British Columbians have ‘fend memories of their travels on this well-run service, which aver- aged about 22 eight-day trips a year on the Alaska run. (In the win- ter months the Prince George was laid up, making ready for the fal- lowing onslaught of sea-going tourists.) Actually, some readers might get this ship confused with the original S.S. Prince George, built in around 1910, She was one of two fast new three-funnelied liners at that time, buiit to provide passenger service from Prince Rupert to the Queen Charlotte Islands. . These two ships quickly gained a reputation for their speed and comfort, and their run was extend- ed in 1916 to Skagway, Alaska. The original S.5. Prince George was destroyed by fire in Ketchikan, Alaska in 1945 and the Prince George I have sketched was built to replace it. The Prince George is a seven- deck passenger vessel, raken bow, crulser stern, with a curved bridge, and one funnel. Its dimensions are 335.1 ft. by 52.1 ft. It has two six cylinder uni- flow steam engines (pressure 240 pounds) and it could carry 322 pas- sengers. In 1975, shortly before it was to retire because of its age, it suffered a fire (started from a heater .in a cabin) which engulfed 20 cabins before it was extinguished. Since then it was spruced up and docked at New Westminster for Expo tourist accommodation. It was subsequently used as a bunk- ship for the Val Dez oi! spill clean up. Hopefully, there is a future in store for the Prince Georye. I would like to acknowledge the staff of the Vancouver Maritime Museum for information used in this article. Vines offer shade for patios From page 15 _ December to two or three buds and * spaced 20 to 30 cm (eight to 12 in.) ‘apart. . ; _ A grape vine will grow four to: five metres (12 to 15 ft.) per year but without regular pruning will produce very little fruit. If you have a free standing trellis or pergola, the vine trunk can be grown up the side (preferably the north or shady side) and then branched into three ‘or four parallel vines running lengthways along the top of the lattice work. Eack vine should be 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24 in.) apart. Again, limit the permanent growth to this initial framework and prune to two or three buds. . Any trellis work should be strong enough to support several five to 10 kg (10 to 20 lbs.) raccoons. Once ‘they find your grape vine they will visit each yeur a week or two before the grapes are fully ripened. This year they nct only picked many of my grapes before they were ripe but also broke several punes of glass and fell into the preenhouse, breaking numerous plants on the way down. The only consolation was that one of the plants they landed on was a large prickly cactus. The only non-lethal deterrent for these urban bandits is the installation « § of an electric fence. ‘ re a tive eiais TTT TTT “eee avrnae Pr er rte et eee eee cad aten. Grapes require a lot of work both in training and pruning but they pro- vide benefits other than the fruit they produce. They leaf out quite late in the spring, but just in time to create a natural covering to shade the green- house when it starts to get too hot.
