major mistake Dear Editor: Amen, and thank you Lorraine Harvey for “A monument to victims of violence is not the answer" (Sept. 16, page 7). Somebody please listen! In the “saga of the Women's Monument Project,” whatever may be intended in the hearts and minds of any of its proponents, this “monu- ment” has taken on a symbolism far beyond remembrance and grief and, in fact, speaks more about funda- mental relationships between men and women, girls and boys. The monument symbolizes and declares that men are the evil ones and women, uniformly, are beyond reproach or responsibility for “the way things are” in this violent saci- ety. Perception is reality, This monu- ment would enshrine violence between the sexes! 1, for example, do not want to have io by to explain to my son or daughter that not all women think that mer are basically “bad” nor do all women think that females are the only “good” people in our society. Please do not saddle fathers and mothers with this impossible and counter-productive burden, If we truly want a less viclent society, do not low this declaration of war between the sexes to be cast in stone. I do believe that more and more men are admitting mistakes, learning und trying to express themselves without violence and with respect. As a man, | expect nothing less from women, Whether you like it or not, this monument is now accepted generally as‘a symbol of the hatred felt by women against men. This monument has become a mistake. Anger, denial, biterness and pos- cibly hate-inspired revenge against men is the only explanation possibie for continuing the Women's Monument Project as it is proposed and in progress. Alan Haynes North Vancouver Dear Editor: With reference to a recent News article by Maureen Curtis, residents and staff of Kiwanis Ledge are sorely dis- turbed by the comments of West Vancouver Coun. Andy Danyliu. He disapproves of the possibility of a {50-bed long- term care facility being “plunked,” in the community of Cedardate, his old neighbor- hood. However, Mayor Mark Sager, Coun, Diana Hutchinson and many others are aware of the urgent need for a long-term care facility in West Vancouver. During their life time in West Vancouver, residents of places like Kiwanis Lodge have owned their own homes, paid taxes and taken an active role togeth- er with their families to make West Vancouver the desirable place it now is to live in.
