By Layne Christensen Fashion Reporter Sharp Hair Design, a North Vancouver salon, staged the event, called “Culture Shock,” to raise money for the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation and to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the salon’s opening. ; The idea of a charity hair show was conceived at the salon’s annual retreat at Whistler last October, according to salon owner Sally Duffy, whose team of talented styl- ists coordinated the fashions and styled the hair and makeup for the runway show, ‘The four segments of the pre- sentation portrayed hair and cos- tume from different cultures — First Nations, Greek, African and hore News: me) Spanish -— that have influenced comtemporary fashions, Frank Wells of the Lil’wat nation (ML Currie) set the tone of the first seament with his high- voltage performance, in full regalia, of a men's traditional dance. Native-inspired designs by Pamela Baker-Pack and Janice Schneider highlighted the first seg- ment. Baker-Pack, who hopes to attend the Otis Parsons School of Fashion Design in Los Angeles, and Schneider, who in August will study at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, are both recent graduates of Capilano College's textile arts program. ; Their hand-printed and appli: queed fabrics in easy shapes and soft desert colors made reference to their native heritage. Like a primitive wall painting, buffaloes and hunters caced across the buttery surface of a natural- dyed silk noile vest by Schneider. Another of her creations — a loose fitting tunic in gold — was check- ered with Aztec prints. Hair was centre-parted and braided from forehead to ends to form two ‘pig- tails down the back. To open the next segment, a striking gladiator in white toga, gold armbands and curly locks crowned by a laurel wreath ushered in a bevy of Greek goddesses car- rying food for a feast of Dionysian proportions. Angelic curls, finger waves and glossy ringlets were piled high atop the head and, together with the Mowing, chiffon wraps created by Sharp staff, set the romantic tone of the Greek segment. For the African segment, the models wore colorful fashions from Lonsdale Quay’s Out of Africa Global Culture and danced to the soundtrack of Rain Man and the ORG > to Mike Wakefield RESIDENTS OF Hollyburn House in West Vancouver were recently treated to a show of { spring and summer fashions by Leigh Morga Vic and Rita Hor Jeweller a n during their afternoon tea.
