Diamond has a tragic past

history of tragedy. Cartier sold
the blue stone to Evalyn Walsh
McLean in 1910, who suffered a
number of misfortunes. When she
was a teenager, an accident took
the life of her younger brother.
Years later, her own nine-year-
old son died in a car accident. To

add to the misery, her 25-year-old -

daughter died by taking an over-
dose of sleeping pills, which led to
McLean’s own death shortly
thereafter. The Smithsonian In-
stitute, however, has continued to
thrive since it purchased the Hope
Diarnond.in 1958.
