Unusual use of Craftsman style VIEWING THIS house from the front is very deceptive as it ap- pears to be quite small, but from a side view it takes on larger pro- portions. NORTH SHORE HERITAGE _ by Dorothy Foster The time of construction cannot be pinpointed, but it is believed to have been built around 1910, and in 1916 it was owned by Thomas McEwen. : It is an unusual adaption of the Craftsman style of architecture which is distinguished by the use of random ashlar granite stone- work on the ground floor, scrolled purlin ends, and the arch over the mset corner porch. ’ Also typical of this style are the cross-leaded casement windows and the side gable with the belicast roof and front shed dormer. Since it was built it has oc- cupied a double Jo: with a stone wail and posts across the front of it. A new home has just recently been built on this lot. 1 was directed to ask any ques- tions about this house to a next door neighbor, Virginia, as she had lived there a long time. In fact, -Virginia’ moved into the house next door on the east side of this one in 1918 with her fami- ly. She attended Ridgeway School, and recalled coming home to pic- nics in the afternoons under the shade of a weeping willow tree in the lot that was alongside this house. Ladies from up and down the street attended these gather- ‘COLONY FEATURES THE SIMMONS WAREHOUSE PRICING | f UNBEATABLE VALUE LARGEST -BEDDING DISPLAY: , on the NORTH SHORE | “ "Save now at ; iid] COLONY HOME FURNISHINGS § : 1075 Reoseveli Crescent North Vancouver {2 blocks behind tive Avaion Hotel) Lg noe en ee mak t ‘a a i Was a Hares OB ag ne ; scone OY , HI 315 East 10th St., North Vancouver, built circa 1910 ings, bringing cookies and treats to be enjoyed by all of them and their children. The owner, Mrs. McCarthy, was a good friend of Virginia’s mother, and they were both avid gardeners. Mrs. McCarthy would specially order plants like rose bushes and peonies, which they would tend. : One of these rose bushes still survives at the front of the house. Peonies were split and dispersed up and down the street to the fadies at the picnics. Few people can say that for 74 years they lived in the same city block, let alone next door to a house so that they saw and knew most of the people that lived there during that time. Virginia recalled that a former manager for Wallace Shipyards was one of the previous owners, and that this was one of the first houses in the area to have hot- water heating. Many thanks to Virginia Tin- muth for her insights into the house next door to her, and for sharing some of her past with all of us. Check lawn facts FICTION: LAWNS should be cut short to encourage future growth. Fact: This practice may in fact cause your lawn to thin out. Most lawns should be cut no shorter than 24% 10 three in- ches. This could mean that your lawn may require mowing twice weekly in the spring and fall. However, mawing may only be necessary once every two weeks in the hot summer months. Since the root system of a grass plant grows propor- tionately to the above-ground parts of the plant, a longer cutting height results in a stronger, deeper root system. As a rule of thumb, no more than a third of a grass plant should be removed with each mowing. You should also ensure that your mower blade is kept cazor-sharp, A sharp blade will make a clean, precise cut. This Showroom crisp cut allows the grass plant to heal quickly and the lawn looks very tidy. A dull blade chews and frays the grass blades. This messy chopping results in jagged, rough tips which give the lawn an ugly grey appearance and exposes the -vounded tissue to attack by disease. To maintain a razor-sharp blade it may be necessary to- have the blade sharpened up to. - three times in a single season. . Remember to sharpen the blade of even a new fawn mower; few new mowers aré sold with a pre-sharpened - blade. : . : : . (A sharpened blade will also reduce wear and tear on your | lawn mower.) © One final tip. Always change the direction that you .mow your lawn every time you mow. This will keep the grass blade” growing strong and straight,.- while reducing weed grass in-' festation. . : Custom built. closet organizer: | installed or- | Do-it-yourself Mirror Doors —.
