1 found the Grand Cherokee’s
acceleration adequate for most ci-
ty and highway driving, but I'm
hot sure I'd want to tow a 5,000
lb. trailer, even though it’s
capable of doing it. Traiier-towers
should wait for the $.2-litfe V8
engine which will be available in
the Grand Wagoneer model and
optional in some Grand Cherakee
models. It offers more horsepower
(220) and a towing capacity of
6,500 Ibs.

One of the most impressive
features of the Grand Cherokee is
its ride and handling. Statistically,
the Grand Cherokee will! be
spending much of its time on city
Streets and freeways rather than
off the beaten track.

Its unique unibody construction
and solid axte/coil spring suspen-
sion are much better suited to
these environments and produce a
tide that is exceptionally smooth,
quiet and comfortable for a 4X4.
This is particularly true in the rear
seat where there is much less body
roll, bounce, and side-to-side mo-
tion than other sport utilities. The
Grand Cherokee is no BMW, but
it’s no truck either.

Grand Cherokees are available
with three different 4WD transfer

cases, a part-time system (engaged
on loose surfaces only), a full-
time systern @which offers the op-
tion of switching back to 2WD),
and a permanently engaged ali-
the-time 4WD system. With the
latter system, there is virtually no
sensation of the system working
on dry pavement. But when the
Grand Cherokee loses traction,
power is automatically dispersed
to the wheels that need it. This
immediate response is a major
safety benefit of all-wheel-drive
systems.

The interior of the Grand
Cherokee is very well laid out and
well-finished. Standard seat cloth
is attractive and durable and op-
tional leather and woodgrain
panelling is available. A couple of
complaints: the rear windows
don't go al] the way down and the
rear seats were not equipped with
headrests.

The manufacturer’s suggested
retail price for the base Grand
Cherokee with a five-speed man-
ual transmission is $20,995; the
Laredo, which only comes with an
automatic transmission starts at
$24,170. Top-of-the-line Limited
begins at $32,115. The Grand
Cherokee is now one of the best,
if not the best, sport utility vehi-
cles on the market.
