During the credits of The Marry- ing Man, a lone star appeared next to the actors’ names. Definitely an omen, Multi-millionaire toothpaste heir Charley Pearl (Alec Baldwin) has decided to mothball his playboy lifestyle and marry the proverbial nice gir!, Adele Horner (Elisabeth Shue). Her movie mogu! father (Robert Loggia) smells something rotten (the script, perhaps?) and his premonition proves correct. it's during his stag weekend in Vegas that Charley falls gonads over heels for buxom lounge singer Vicki Anderson (Kim Bass- inger). Even the fact that she is linked with notorious mobster “Bugsy” Siegel (Armand Assante) doesn’t squelch a late-night rendezvous. However, the passion wanes a bit when Bugsy makes a surprise visit. In an apparently perverse mood, he forces them to marry at gun- Tim Bell FILM REVIEW point, setting in motion the curse that will follow them for the rest of the movie — a series of break-ups, annulments and divorces, punc- tuated by bouts of marriage. Although the story was based an fact. Neil Simon’s script is far-fet- ched and fails to wring laughs from the situation. A voice-over by Charley’s comedic friend Phil Golden (Paul Reiser) only ag- gravates matters with lame one- liners. But the real failure is in the two leads. Kim — poor, sweet Kim — can’t Keg menu still needs a bit of polishing From page 26 Snapper, Salmon, Shrimp, Lobster and Crab. The old, or the old favorites, make up the red meat heart of the Keg menu. And why not? it’s a simple meat-and-potatoes formula that appeals to a wide audience and that has inspired a thousand im- itators. The Keg’s new wine menu is uncomplicated, easy to read and informative. Selections from Australia, the U.S., Canada and Europe range from about $11 up to $25, and each comes with a concise description of the wine’s charac- te7. But elsewhere in the Keg menu some of the more subtle details need polish. From the Keg’s Starters and Salad list, Table Hopping selected Chicken Wings (Red Hot, $5.99) and a Keg Caesar Salad (regular, $3.99, and Keg Size, $5.99). The wings were good, delivered with a Cajun-style hot sauce that nipped but did not scorch the tongue. MARTIN GILBERT Famous Churchill Biographer But the Caesar was disappoin- ting: it had no croutons; and the “crisp romaine” lettuce was far from crisp. The meat of the entree menu, however, acquitted itself ad- mirably. A New York Centre-Cut Steak (14 0z, $16.99; 10 oz. $13.99) came sequined with black pep- percorns and accompanied with a spirited bell-pepper sauce. The steak was cooked to medi- um-rare specifications and delivered subtle mesquite aromas and flavors. We resisted the temptations of such Keg desserts as World Famous Billy Miner Pie ($3.99 full stice; $1.99 half slice), Nanaimo Bar ($2.99) and Double Dark Chocolate ($3.29), and moved in- stead to the Keg Jounge area in front of the restaurant's grand bar to watch the human parade. And it is a human parade filled with enthusiasm and youth. Keg Goodtimes, | suppose — a spirit with attraction for all ages. The Keg has returned to North Vancouver with all cylinders firing. Which is OK if your name is Flicka (but then Flicka never cleared a coo! million for such a dismal performance). As for Alec Baldwin — a pure Vanilla lce performance: all show, no soul. So, word to your mother (and father, and friends, and rela- tives) — it ain‘'t no honeymoon. The Tall Guy *% (Cineplex and RCA Home Video) Rated R Major disappointment from Bri- tain stars a tired Jeff Goldblum as an unhappy, under-used straightman in a hit show, There are some laughs when he gets the tead in a musical version of The Elephant Man (called Elephant!) and we get a trunkload of ghastly toe tappers including the finales, There’s an Angel in Heaven with Big Ears.
