Tarrant featured at
Bradner flower show

FOR OVER 60 years the community of Bradner has delighted visitors
to its annual flower show.

This year’s show features David Tarrant, the renowned TV person-
ality of **Canadian Gardener,’’ who will officially open the show on
Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m.

The theme will be Easter Parade and there will be an Easter Bonnet
Parade which will be judged shortly after the official opening.

As always, the focus will be on the many varieties of daffodils
grown in the area —- some 400 different blooms will be on display.
Also highlighted will be displays from other growers, including or-
chids and geraniums.

Admission is $1 and the tea roam will be well stacked with sand-
wiches, cakes and other goodies, all made by community volunteers.
Supper will be served Friday and Saturday evenings from 5 to 7 p.m.
All of the proceeds from the show go toward local community pro-
jects.

Dates for the 1990 show are: Friday, April 13. 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.:
Saturday, April 14, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, April 15. 10 a.m.
to6 p.m.

Early mornings and evenings are usually less busy.

In addition to her passion for
plants, Day is an advocate of
garden clubs. which she believes
could do their part in spreading
knowledge about native plants by
way of public shows. Once a direc-
tor of the American Native Plant
Society and founder of a Nor-
thwest Coast chapter in Oregon,
she asserts that a provincial native
plant society could also play an
important role in helping preserve
threatened and endangered plants.

Day is more than willing to do

her own part to preserve wild plant
stock. After years of searching, she
and her husband have purchased
her ‘tdream”’ garden. Situated on
the east coast of Vancouver Island,
it features five acres with three
microclimates. where, she says
proudly, ‘‘You can grow
everything.””

Three years from now she hopes
to have a wildflower nursery so
that she can provide people with
native plant seedlings. Perhaps by
then, her moniker as native plant
woman will really take root.
