Selects win nationals

THE SKILL and determination
that made them the best in B.C.
and which earned them a berth for
national competition was once
again demonstrated by the North
Shore Selects as they defeated On-
tario 1-0 in the final round to win
the prestigious Petro-Canada Cup
and the National Championship
Title.

In round one the first Selects’
goal was scored by Simon Daniels
off a left-footed rising rocket.

Other scorers were Carmen
D'Onofrio with two goals, Andrew
English with one, and Gavin Frey.

a comer kick, as B.C. went on to
defeat Nova Scotia 5-1.

In the second round, goals by
English, D’Cnofrio and Alfred
Wendt, whose second goal capped
off a brilliant display of six con-
secutive one-teach passes starting
from the back line, preserved a 4-2
victory over a very tough end
physical team from Quebec and
sent B.C. into the Final.

The steady play of goalkeepers
Simon Griffiths and David Bernier
backed the solid performance of
defenders Miki Trpin, Robbie

Ferguson, David Elligott,
Mashahiko Hashimoto and Grey
which allowed mid-field players
Simon Daniels, English, Nick

Glabus, Stefan Pauli along with .

forwards Romualdo Cusano, Tim
Van Samang, Derek Petersen,
D’Onofrio and Wendt to hold a
decisive territorial edge in the
triumph over the fine Ontario
squad.

The championship winning goal
was scored by Wendt who beat a
defender and the goalkeeper after
teceiving the ball from a free-kick
taken by Frey.
