Ls ad NDA | THE LIONS Gate chapter of the international singing group Sweet Adelines is to-appear in a Barbershop Goes to the Movies night at Richmond’s Gateway Theatre on June 6. “It’s an international women’s singing organization with over 30,000 members worldwide,’’ chapter spokesman Pat Tito explained of the Sweet Adelines. On the North Shore for over 30 years, the 70- member group offers women a chance to develop their singing skills in the group’s rehearsals and competi- tions. Singing in the 1987 regional championships won the local group the chance to compete in the -1988 inter- national Sweet Adelines convention in Houston, Tex. “The competition really gives you something to strive for,’ said Tito, a singer herself. ‘‘We teach barbershop harmony so it’s a learning experience.”’ Society to give For singers interested in joining the group, the Lions Gate chapter of Sweet Adelines will be hosting special guest nights for the public June 16 and 23. “It’s to bring in new members,’’ Tito said, noting there will be a host of singing demonstrations. ‘There _ won't be any actual auditions on that night.”’ Singers will be selected by audition and “‘have to be able to carry a tune.”’ Open to all, the group’s members range from 19 years old to 70 years old, with the majority of the Sweet Adelines members being in their 20s, 20s and 40s.
