Lifestyles _— V-CON 15 CONVENTION Science fiction fans to meet STEP BACK in time to the golden age of science fiction and fantasy. A time when bug-eyed monsters vied with giant robots for control] of the Earth. A time before the first moon landing, when fife on Mars was still a possibility. A time when mighty warriors fought their way through page after page of pulp magazines and comics. V-Con 15, a convention for fans of science fiction and fantasy, will take you back to that time, The convention, which will be held May 22 to 24 at the University of B.C. campus in Vancouver, will explore the history of science fic- tion and fantasy. Through panel discussions, films, story readings, and historic radio and television broadcasts, the convention will look at fantasy and science fiction in magazines, books, films, and on radio and television. The convention will also feature some of the greats of that era. Guest speakers at the convention will include Sam Moskowitz, a science fiction historian and an- thologist. His first book The Im- mortal Storm, 1954, is an account of early science fiction fandom. His series of magazine articles on science fiction was collected in three volumes: Explorers of Time, 1963; Seekers of Tomorrow, 1966; and Strange Horizons, 1976. The convention will also bring in Alex Schomburg as a = guest 25 - Wednesday, May 20, 1987 - North Shore News speaker. Schomburg, who has done cover art for virtually every science fiction magazine over the years, got his start as an illustrator with a 1925 magazine cover for Hugo Gernsback's magazine Science and Invention. Since then, Schomburg’s work has appeared on book, magazine, and comic book covers, notably those of Ace Books and Winston Books. Chroma, a collection of his art in book form, has just been published. The third guest speaker is For- rest J. Ackerman, who has been called ‘‘the world’s number one Science fiction fan.’’ The cost for a weekend pass is $18 or $20 at the door.
