THE MOMENT the first balloon water bomb catapulted from one sailboat to the next
at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 17, the seventh annual North Shore News Sailing Race was on.

Naval traditions were upheld during the race, as many skippers chose to ‘risk thelr
tactical leads in order to inflict more water balloon broadsides on other vessels, and the
old mauitary command ‘Don’t fire anti) you see the whites of their cyes’ took on new
meaning.

Crew members of the Talofa Lee had been up late the alight before designing a
five-foat long, six-inch diameter ‘balloon gun’ buat were mortified to find it a dismal

fallure with only one shot In 10 ranging more than a few fect and the majority of ‘shells’
exploding in the barrel.
