EE sport Franklin-Harper in golf rematch For the second consecutive spring, amateur Brent Franklin will face Canadian Tour Professional Sandy Harper in the 36-hole Steel Brothers B.C. Match Play Open golf championship. This time, however, Franklin comes in as the defending champion, reign- ing Canadian and B.C. Junior title holder and at 18, the most talented teenage golfer in the nation. Harper, on the other hand, has added a year of confidence and experience to his game after playing in Asia and Australia, and has not for- gotten his 6 & 5 loss to Franklin in 1983. Getting to this year’s final brought out the best in Franklin, a member at Shaughnessy GC. In the quarter-finals Saturday at Marine Drive, facing the host club’s Assistant BCPGA Professional Keith Westover, the lanky Franklin overcame a one-hold deficit on the 16th hole, then nailed a 15’ putt for par on the 18th to secure a one-up victory. Sunday in the semi-finals at Shaughnessy against Cana- dian Tour Pro Steve Anderson-Chapman of Vic- toria, Franklin never trailed in the match but it took a 12’ birdie putt on the 3rd extra hole to win it. Franklin ted two-up after 14 holes with both players playing sub-par golf, but a three-putt green at 15 and a wild tee-shot at 18 allowed Anderson-Chapman room to comeback. Escaping missed birdie putts by Anderson-Chapman at the first and second holes, Franklin struck a four-iron crisply to the heart of the green on the par-three third, ending 21 holes of outstand- ing shotmaking with his fourth birdie of the round. He was also credited with a ‘conceded eagle’ fr6m about four feet at the 470-yard par five fifth. With an improved putting stroke and total control over his short irons, Harper ad- vanced through the first two rounds to meet formidable Norm Jarvis, and the Prt. Grey GC pro went the dis- tance before bowing on the 18th I-up Saturday at Marine Drive. in Sunday’s drizzle at Shaughnessy, Harper led Kel- ly Murray 2-up after eight holes and won four of the six on the back nine including in uphill birdie at 15 to win 5 and 3. In Saturday’s other quarter-finals Anderson- Chapman eliminated amateur Brad Ewart as the Pitt Méadows member hit everything but the hole and at times must have thought he was putting softballs before picking up on the 13th and down 7 and 5. Meanwhile two of the longest hitters in Canadian professional golf, BCPGA champ Jim Rutledge of Victoria and Murray battl- ed back and forth for 17 holes before Murray beat the two-time B.C. Open cham- pion 2 and 1. And now the _ rematch, Sunday, May 20 at Point Grey. . Franklin has gained immeasurable experience since winning this title and the Steel Brothers Trophy a year ago. Harper is more reserved and polished around the greens and itching to avenge for last year‘s perfor- mance when he admits, ‘‘I took Brent too casually last year’’. Winning the B.C. Match Play Open has gained added significance over the last few years. In 1981 Dough Rox- burgh opened his season win- ning the inaugural Steel .Brothers event and closed with his Third Canadian Amateur crown. 1983 saw the emergence of Franklin as a bonafide prodigy with his na- tional and provincial Junior. titles and impressive show- ings at the Canadian Amateur (30th) and World Junior (T3rd). While Franklin shoots to become the first player in at least a decade to win two con- secutive championships, Harper has his sights set on the professionals’ first prize cheque of $1,500. The finals Sunday at Point Grey begin at 8:30am and continue at 1 pm.
