For a variety of reasons, neither of the smal] sixes was certified for sale in North America. The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) set by the U.S. government was a primary consideration; even a fuel- injected version of the smaller 2-liter six would have been less fuel-efficient than the 2-liter four-cylinder unit then used in the’ North America 320i — not to men- tion the 1.8-liter engine scheduled for 1980 and beyond. A six-cylinder 320i, therefore was not a realistic alternative to the existing **four’’. And as an addition to the line, so reasoned the BMW-NA planners the 3231 would cut into 320i sales and make difficult or impossi- ble to meet upcoming CAFE standards. Since thsoe early days of the six-cylinder 3-Series, many things have happened to alter these considerations. Development of the Eta engine is the most significant. By increasing displacements to 2.7 liters and tailoring it for very high efficiency at low to medium engine speeds, the Munich engineeer achieved an engine with the power of the Euro- pean 2-liter six but significant greater pulling capability and fuel economy. The result is now well known: in the 528e, this Eta engine provides the kind of performance that is supremely usable in American driving, together with remarkable fuel efficiency. With this engine, it would now be possible to offer a six- cylinder 3-Series mode} without the fuel-economy penalty that a 3231 would have entailed. Other factors helped turn this dream into reality too. One was that the large BMW models were now achieving much better fuel eonomy, thus contributing more to the government- mandated CAFE mniteages. Sull another was a renewal of American drivers’ interest in performance. Now, Starting in early 1984, BMW of North America will offer a compact BMW _ in_high-performace form. In the 325e, the famihar Eta engine is essentially un- changed from its application in the $28e.
