B6 - Wednesday, May 9, 1984 - North Shore News EEE sport VICTORIA DAY WEEKEND Racing the Capilano whitewater THE CAPILANO Whitewater Races are held during the spring of every year in Captlano Canyon Park, North Vancouver. The race site is easily accessible to the general public and pro- vides for some spectacular paddling. The rapids are in- termediate and above in dif- ficulty, and located in a scenic canyon throughout. The Capilano Race ts con- sidered by many to be the premier race of the kayaking season. It is one of the three selection races for B.C.’s Provincial Team and is the longest-running whitewater competition in Western Canada. It began in 1968 with twenty competitors and has grown steadily since that time. The race now draws anywhere from. seventy to one hundred paddlers. These come from all over the Pacific Northwest. There 1s usually a large American con- tingent from Washington and Oregon; there are paddlers from Vancouver Island, Kamloops, northern” B.C. and Alberta; occasionally there are even racers who come out from Quebec to compete. Many otf Canada’s best paddlers live right here in the Lower Mainland. For in- stance, Stan Woods, who was Canadian Men’s National Slalom Champion in 1980 and 1982 (he did not compete in 1983) lives in Vancouver, as does Morna Fraser, who was Canadian Women’s Wildwater Champion in 198] and 1982 (she did not com- pete in 1983). Ms. Fraser 1s, without doubt, Canada’s top temale wildwater paddler. She placed fourth in the Pre- Worlds, and fourth in the German Nationals — a stag- gering achievement consider- ing the calibre of interna- tional competition. Also, the coach for the Canadian National Team — Eric Munshaw — lives in Chilliwack. This year the Capilano Race will be held on the Vic- tora Day week-end.
