Both North Vancouver RCMP and the West Van- couver police are issuing lists of dos and don'ts for Hallowe'en, next Monday. Behind the list ts a pitch for area youngsters to use com- mon sense while taking part in their traditional candy- gathering treks through local neighborhoods. The ideal situation, police say, ts for children to forgo door-to-door trick or treating in favor of neighborhood parties. It’s safer and just as much fun, police point out. Those who have no Cracking down on the pickers A NUMBER of North Shore youths face criminal records and others were fortunate to have escaped charges as police crack magic mushrooms. The fall crop of psilocybe Mexicana - tiny mushrooms that are powerful hallucinogenics — is out now and will be available over the next few weeks. With the coming of the mushrooms has come a stampede of youths tramping over private and public pro- perty in search of the natural ‘*high’’. But since the spring of 1982, possession of the so- called magic mushrooms has been illegal, leaving those caught with them liable to fines of between $1,000 and $5,000 and jail terms ranging from six months to three years. Along with the change in the legislation — before 1982 possession of the mushrooms New Heights! down on those chasing was not illegal — has come to a police crackdown on those using the mushrooms throughout the province. The mushrooms contain the drug psilocybin which has a variety of side-effects rang- ing from an intense high to dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Trips can last for several hours and while there is no evidence the mushrooms are physically addicting, they are thought to create a psychological depen- dence in regular users. Residents of the area are asked to contact police when they have mushroom pickers foraging through their yards and are warned that petty thieves some times use mushroom-picking as a cover for studying a house as a possible break-in target. Children should be accom- panied by an adult or an older brother and sister and should wear light-colored costumes or ones that will reflect light. Flashlights should be car- ried and children should wear make-up instead of vision- restricting masks.
