A9 - Sunday, June 3, 1984 - North Shore News Barrett risks case of electronic arthritis OU PROBABLY COULDN’T CARE LESS about the fortunes of radio stations. But ’'m not writing this for you. I’m writing it for me. Having journeyed in radioland, you see, I’m inclined to talk about my trip even though no one wants to listen. Visitors to Afghanistan or China are inclined to do the same thing. Even so, |! wouldn’t be going on about the place today if it weren’t for Dave Barrett’s decision to enter the lists on behalf of CJOR. The CJOR management must be getting up early in the morning to pray that Bar- rett will be successful. And well it might, since the station is a disaster area. If a single right move has been made in the recent past, no one has heard about it. The station numbers among the elec- tronic arthrities cases. Barrett probably doesn’t a ““Must be getting up early to pray”’ give a hoot about whether his horse buckles under him or not, of course. At $160,000 a year, plus $36,000 from the grateful taxpayers, he is not going to worry even if his wife and kids are the only ones listening. If he is suc- cessful, on the other hand, he will be the first politicain to make it. John Reynolds and Rafe Mair both bit the dust before him, and Bill Vander Slam, who recently replaced Pat Burns for a couple of week, was sleep-inducing, ex- cept to gardening nuts. Barrett faces a tough ride. As far as CJOR is concerned, the latest ratings book reads like Chopin’s Funeral March, and getting an audience in this overcrowded market is harder than setting up business in Siberia. For radio, the 8am-9am time slot is one of the most important periods of the day. But at that time, with an average audience of 26,200, the station ranks number a get this Straight Doug Collins EEN eight out of 14 (and the 14 in- clude stations like CBUFM, the CBC French outfit!) Those numbers compare with CKNW’s 87,200. For the 8 am news itself, the situation is even worse: 35,700 for "OR compared to 103,100 for "NW. Another pointer: CJOR’S share of total au- dience at 8 am is five per cent, CKNW’S 25 per cent. The period in which Bar- rett will preach shows the same sad picture. Mair was in the saddle when the rating was taken, and limped in ninth, with an average for his three hours of 20,400. That compared with Gary Banner- man’s 44,000. Moving right along, we come to 12:30, your humble correspondent’s old spot, now occupied by Art Finley. Collins, we may note, is the only guy in history to be dropped after adding 10,000 to the audience in one year, and was nudging CK WX for third place. Modesty forbids further comment, except to say that manager Harvey Gold’s rearrangement puts CJOR in tenth place for that time. Good. And Gold’s new star, Bob Spence, is also in tenth place for the important ‘drive’? hours — 3:30 to 6, with a big 11,300 listeners. David Berner (another Gold brainwave) is practically off the dial with 3,100 to ’NW’s 15,800. The only guy to hold his own is Pat Burns. My prediction: Barrett will get a big curiosity rating to begin with and then fade. Taking his gold with him.
