Al2 - Sunday, May 15, 1983 - North Shore News GROWING DESTRUCTION. Life cycle of the gypsy moth is shown from egg mass stage in first picture. Caterpillars, likely to be hatching at this time, are the threat to trees and wood products, feeding at a voracious pace. They can be identified by the double row of dots along thelr backs — five pairs of blue and six pairs of red. Pictures on A1l3 start with the female gypsy moth, who is prevented from flying by the weight of her wings. THIS SUMMER’s count of gypsy moths in North Vancouver shows spray- ing is necessary, the most likely choice of chemical by Agriculture Canada would be carbaryl. Manufactured under the brand name Sevin, carbary! is used in flea powders on dogs and humans. It has been linked with birth mutations and with cancer and is suspected of aggravating hypertension and diabetes. Program manager John Gold is sensitive about the issue of chemicals even being raised at this point. The last thing he wants is a repeat of the community confrontation experienced in the Kitsilano spraying of 1979 — especially before the need for spraying has even yet been determined. All Agnculture Canada knows at this point is that last summer's survey of the moth produced four positive traps in North Vancouver. And in one trap alone, in the 3000 block Capilano Road there were three male moths. Program manager John Gold says a single trap with three moths is) com parable to the Kitsilano outbreak. By CHRIS LLOYD The Kits furore’ ended with the government only spraying the properties of owners who consented. Gold stresses this would also be the case in North Van and that any decision to spray at all would be made in consul- tation with the municipality. But he says the fact that the moth was beaten in Kits amounted to the department “lucking out" and apparently zeroing in on the core area of the infestation and managing to wipe it out by spraying properties where they had permission to do so. The question of spraying on the North Shore might be even tougher to make — with more at stake For one thing, its a heavier treed area. For another, gypsy moths don't just confine their destruction to trees but can attack wood inall forms As such. if wood tmporang countnes learned there was an outbreak of gypsy moth in North Van it BED BLOW OUT all sizes in stock. Gold predicts lumber importing countnes would impose conditions such as thorough inspections which would be costly for the entire lumber industry. Meanwhile, North Shore residents have it within their power to minimize the threat of an outbreak. Agriculture Canada has been distributing leaflets to homes in and near the suspect areas, asking residents to scour their properties for signs of gypsy moth egg masses. Presence of the moth can be detected from a matenal which covers the egg masses — which looks like a small. irregularly shaped piece of chamois leather. They may be glued to trees, walls, garden furniture. camping equipment or even roof gutters Agticulture Canada workers will be conducting their own search program around the end of June when the first gypsy moths emerge from thei cocoons The government workers will be locating thea traps in one mile square grids 3 — Photos submitted centred in the areas where they came up with positive traps last year. Heaviest concentration will be around 3000 Capilano Road, where 2,000 traps will be set up. Other key areas will be the 2700 block Mount Seymour Parkway, the 1100 block Dollarton Highway and 2200 block Panorama Avenue. The traps are baited with a sex attractant scent, similar to that put out by females of the species, to lure male moths. The numbers of males trapped will be used as the basis for determining the extent of the moths’ presence. By that time it will be too late to start any eradication program for this year. The period of destruction is during the caterpillar stage. By the time they have metamorphosized into moths the feeding is over. During the moth's seven-day lifespan its only function 1s to reproduce, with females laying about 200 eggs each Decision time would be next year. when those eggs hatch Gypsy moths mulaply in such numbers that they are beyond eradication by their natural predators, such as 15-40% OFF All SIMMONS Regular Size MHI lat i aly ig vil tH id i i! ii ui a tt veh sizes in stock - over 80 models “499° daa bo4bh ‘Colonial, traditional, contemporary. wed beds b Simmons, Sealey, Kroehler,: esti pie and. ‘Michasl-Kaye.
