Levesque aired his bitter message in a 30 minute program highlighting Quebec's Major greivances with the constitution, beginning with what he said was an $8 million price tag. “We must decide that Quebec belongs to us, not only as a home that may be threatened, but as a country where we can feel truly at home,” Levesque told French television viewers a few hours after Queen Elizabeth landed in Ottawa on her four-day State visit to proclaim the new Canadian con- stitution. Face saving for Falklands? Secretary of State Alexander Haig repor- tedly offered leaders in Buenos Aires a_ face- saving peace package today calling for im- mediate Argentine withdrawal from the Falkiand Islands in return for eventual Argentine sovereignty of the territory and sharing of natural resources with Britian. The move came as the British Cabinet was put on war footing after Argentine warships put to sea Thursday in a possible challenge to the British blockade of the Falkland Islands, seized by Argentina Apnil 2. Haig met for nearly three hours with an Argentine government team headed by Foreign Minister Nicanor Costa Mendez, who earlier said Haig was. bringing “something new”. That was when the weather socked in and from that point the only thing to do was to wait and sit it out. They were well equipped for the conditions and began rationing their food in case they were to be stuck there for a while. They listened anxiously as avalanches crashed around them and even triggered one them- selves to remove the danger of their camp becoming buried. The three passed the time by playing cards and rather than getting on each others’ nerves the experience brought them closer and made them better friends than ever. Meanwhile though, their families began to worry when they didn’t make it home by Sunday and on Monday they called the police. Tuesday morning teams of North Shore Rescue members began their search of the mountain, heading for Elsay Lake, but being forced to turm back by the weather conditions. Winds gusted snow at them and avalanches were a perpetual hazard. Visibility was never better than half a mile and sometimes got down to 10 feet. Searches started becoming a morning routine, with 18 inches of snow falling each night and the weather = steadily deteriorating. A police boat and hovercraft took a team up Indian Arm to Elsay Creek to try to reach the lake by travelling up the = creek banks. During a break in the weather, a small! helicopter dropped two of the rescue team members Allan Danks and Steve Mullins near Elsay Lake so they could) check whether = the Makers had ever made it there They eventually found the roof of the cabin, which was itself 18 feet high, under four feet of snow and it became clear the hikers had not even been tn the area of the lake With the weather con ditions changed so the hehcopter could not return to pick them up the two rescuc members had to hike ther way out oa precamous yourney which look nine hours 1 feijiipnensieneanenmantannansansneheea DINNER rae seh Se eel Wing Lock © RESTAURANT Authentic Cantonese Cuisine 15% off PICK UP ORDERS No Limitations LICE NAStD PREMISES from 4 SOecvery might 1807 Lonsdale, North Van. 985-4158 At times they would have to take half-mile detours to cross creeks and at one point they had to climb down a 350 ft. cliff in order to pass an avalanche area and then climb back up again. Mullins told the News: “If we had tripped or fallen anywhere in there it would have taken at least 14 hours to get us out. It’s vertical all the way down, with chasms and avalanches and it was blowing like mad.” Hope for the “lost” hikers steadily dwindled among the rescuers as they found just how serious the weather conditions were. Then on Wednesday they received a report from a helicopter pilot that he had noticed a camp at the top of Mount Seymour the previous Saturday. With the knowledge that the hikers had never even attempted the treacherous route to Elsay Lake, the rescuers realized there was a good chance they were still alive. Thursday morning they headed for the area given by the helicopter pilot and after three hours they made voice contact with the tno. The rescuers found the three were safe and in good spints but had not expected anyone to be looking for them. Mullins told the News: “They said they didn’t think we'd go out in weather like that. Most people think that. But we a/ways do.” Mullins has been a member of the rescue team for five years and says the avalanche conditions were the worst of any he'd en- countered on his hundreds of searches. But he did ‘not feel frustrated at what he had gone through before establishing that the hikers were safe, adding that they had reacted well to their situation and done everything just nght. “We like 1 when it turns out that way and we find them It really makes it all worthwhile ” 4 J (> VS vals 7 Kaige > AULT OL wv eee q ier TAC ae Nine hours of hiking perils outside... .
