SOME WERE HUNG BY MISTAKE Sleeping next to Boot Hill In Tombstone, we stayed at the Lookout Lodge — just your everyday motel — clean, modern and plastic. One good point is that it’s right across the road from Boot Hill, the famous cemetary where all the old gunfighters, murderers and murdered, hung and shot are buried. Admission is free, except for a box for donations. Before you start looking, go into the gift shop and buy a guide for 50 cents that catalogues the graves and gives a bit of background on many of the internees. You start at the top right- hand corner and work across the rows. As we walked along, I carried the pam- phliet while Brian shouted out the names. As we came to each one, I'd read aloud what occurred. All the markers have been replaced with simple pieces of pipe with names, dates and sometimes a_ cryptic message such as “murdered by ——” or “hung by mistake.” Ouch. Most of the graves are the last resting place of thieves, rogues and gangsters but a few children are inlcuded. Quite sad. Boot Hill is well worth an NIGHT SCHOOL NOTES Catching up on classes By LOIS LIGHT If you meant to go out to the course of your choice the first night of classes, and forgot or had another engagement, don't drop the idea until you check at the office (985-8741) to see if they would still welcome you with open arms. I’m disgusted with myself — somehow I’ve lost my copy of the guide to Boot Hill so if anyone has one, I'd appreciate the travyel- by Ba rbara McCreadie chance to make a copy of it. Another “don’t miss’ spot in Arizona is the little mining town of Bisbee. We could kick ourselves for not planning more time there three of the first lessons. Not that we're recommending it, no, not that! But if you were out of town or ill or had to work, don’t let that prevent you from enjoying the rest of the sessions. Teachers are usually extremely cooperative in helping you to catch up and sometimes it’s rather fun to push ourselves a bit when the need is there. Bisbee is delightful — in fact, if someone were to ask me to suggest the perfect retirement spot for someone who likes clean air, smail town living and a great climate — consider this. If you're going to stay overnight there’s no place like the Copper Queen. How I love old hotels! This one is a dandy — old, comfortable, excellent restaurant, reasonably priced, no — make that CHEAP. One tip I received — specify a room on the op- posite end of the hotel from the bar. That is, if you plan to sleep. From all reports, the bar does a roaring trade until late hours. Better to be IN the bar than OVER it. Bisbee is a mile high and there are no smelly in- dustries. One gulp of that air and you may never touch another cigarette. The residents drive a few miles to the Mexican border town of Agua Prieta and fill up their gas tanks for 45 cents a gallon, or 18 cents for diesel. They also stock their bars for about half of the Arizona liquor prices. Bisbee really welcomes snowbirds. “Why, there's all sorts of winter visitors here. They fit right in, join the clubs, do volunteer work, just grand people,” I was told. I checked out real estate prices. A home that you'd pay $150,000 for in Canada can be had _ for $60,000 down there. Everything is reasonably priced. I sure wish they could bottle the air — I'd pay quite a price for one deep breath!
