B4 - Wednesday, January 6, 1982 - North Shore News Trying to save jobs, says General Motors DETROIT (UPI) - Layoffs and benefit cuts “aren't .too much fun,” especially around the holidays, but are necessary to preserve jobs on a_ long-term basis, General Motors Chairman Roger Smith said recently. “What good does it do to give a guy a big vacation and benefits and all that and then tell him he’s laid off?” Smith said in an interview. GM < sliced vacation, cost of living, medical and other benefits for its 138,000 salaried employees, saving an estimated $500 million. Earlier GM began laying of about 13,000 of its 190,000 worldwide white’ collar workforce. The moves were viewed by some as an effort to establish a cost cutting pattern in advance of up coming negotiations with the United Auto Workers union. GM, which is ex- pected to make a $300 million profit this year, is aimost certain to be the UAW’'s target. Smith said gaining a toehold in the talks was “not the major reason” for the benefit slashes. He said GM is trying to preserve remaining jobs. “Some of them = (cuts) aren't too much fun. Nobody likes to have to cut em- ployment and payrolls, at this time of year _par- ticularly,” Smith said. “At the same time, it’s the long- term jobs we're trying to save here.” Sitting in his wood paneled office, Smith said he did not fear the cuts would cause a “brain-drain” at the automaker. “We may lose some people — we're not going to lose the valuable ones,” he said. “I think there is an understanding we're not doing this because we're trying to earn some money for the corporation.” He praised UAW leaders’ decision to let contracts be reopened if workers ap prove. Smith predicted the UAW'’s GM Council will vote to allow a reopener but said the union may have missed its chance to help its members. “We've asked them and asked them to sit down and Seatcleaning . Plush and comfortable velour car interiors are rapidly replacing viny! as the preferred utomotive upholstery. Th&e's just one problem. Velour is harder to keep clean than vinyl. No matter how careful car owners are, dirt gets inside. And, when people sit on seats, the dirt grinds into the fabric, wearing it away, not to mention making it dirty. A weekly vacuuming regimen will help. But vacuuming won't do much good if someone drops ice cream, coffee, hpsnck or a chocolate bar on the carseat.
