Dear Editor: I have to take issue with Ms. Krista Reili’s comments (MP*s referendum democracy blasted, April 28 North Shore News) concerning MP Ted White and Canadian democracy. First, Mr. White is the best MP owe have ever had in One place gov t works Dear Editor: Surfing the April 21 North Shore News, I was caught) by Ms. Hana Mercer’s eyes, goading any- one to find fault with her thesis. And [ read, “Canada Post is a monopoly because its market dominance is derived ... from ‘an exclusive grant of government privi- lege.” ” And I thought, how much more provoking would it have been for her to write, “The Bank of Canada is a monopoly because our constitution gives it the exclusive right to create our money supply, its legitimacy deriving from its acceptance by government in the pay- ment of taxes.” Then she may have written, “but 98% of our money is credit money created by the private commercial banks by reason of, ‘an exclusive Brant of government privilege.” Then she would have been in deep enough to per- _ haps say, “Since the com- mercial banks now have con- trol of the money creation market — ‘by forcibly pro- hibiting others from enter- _ ing it,’ whenever the govern- ment needs.money to run this country as it sees fit, and if this need exceeds what it collects in taxes and tariffs, etc., it borrows it. But not: from the Bank of Canada where they might expect a reasonable deal, since any interest paid would go bac to the shareholders, the peo- ple of Canada. “Oh, no ch? It borrows from the private commercial banks, which wallow in the interest therefrom, whilst the rest of us are swallowed by The Great Debt.” Ms. Mercer says, “the-e can be no monopoly other than that created by govern- ment.” I say this is one case, where only government (the people, for those who have forgotten) should have a monopoly for at least those monies that cover govern- ~ ment services. The main purpose of our government has become that of paying out interest on the debt, to the banks. And the main purpose of the Bank of Canada, through its gover- nor, is cto rais¢ or lower interest rates, thereby ensu- ing that the country is car- ried along — on the ‘backs of the working poor and the unemployed.
