Lexus LS400 and 4.5-litre-
equipped, recently revised Infiniti
Q4S goes for about $67,000. The
Mercedes-Benz 400E and Audi V8
Quattro, with 4.2-litre V8 engines,
are priced in the mid-to-nigh
$70,000 range.

At the top of the class is the
killer Mercedes-Benz SOOE mode!
with an incredible 315 horsepower
and 347 Ib,-ft. of torque, all
yours for a mere $110,000!

The price advantage is obvious-
ly a big one, but keep in mind
that V8 engines from the higher-
priced competitors in some cases
do offer more power, torque,
smoother feel, or combination of
all three.

Though not as fast and power-
ful as the Northstar-equipped
cars, the Lexus LS400’s V8 engine
is still regarded to be the
benchmark in the areas of
quietness and refinement.

And many well-ty-do
automotive enthusiasts will gladly
pay the extra premium to own a
German sedan, which provides a
higher level of status and
