AVOID HOLIDAY TRAGEDY iViisused toys prove hazardous HOW CAN you be certain that the toys you gave your children this Christmas are not dangerous or in any way hazardous? Thanks to regulations under the Hazardous Products Act of Con- sumer and Corporation Affairs Canada, adults can be confident that the new toys they bought their litle ones are among the safest in the world. But even the safest of toys can be dangerous or hazardous if misused. With that in mind, the Product Safety Branch of Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada suggests a number of ways you can help minimize hazard or risk to your children during the holidays. ¢ Make sure gifts your children received are suitable to the age of the child. Check the age labelling, safety recommendations and other packaging information supplied. For instance, a chemistry set marked as suitable or safe for a 10 to 12-year-old might be unsafe if used by a younger child. ° Make sure gifts given to tod- dlers have no sharp points or edges, or smail parts which could work loose and be inhaled or swallowed. ® Be careful of mobile toys with strings, cords or loops. They should not be used in cribs or playpens where children are old WITH THE recent heavy rains, some Lower Mainland residents may have experienced flooding. The Canadian Standards Association warns that your elec- trical panelboard may have suf- fered flood damage. You should have the panelboard inspected by a qualified electrician or call your local electrical inspection authori- ty. Fusible-type panelboards are easy to check for damage because the panelboard can be opened to see if the fuses and other parts are clean, or if any rusting or other damage has occurred. For circuit’ breaker-type panelboards, however, the circuit breakers are sealed and cannot be checked by visual inspection. For this type of panelboard, it is recommended that the circuit breakers be replaced if it is suspected that they have been flooded. Although the circuit breakers may not appear damaged and will continue to conduct electricity, they may be filled with mud and will not trip open, as they should when ‘a short circuit or overload occurs. Even if there is no mud in the circuit. breakers, deterioration from the flooding can occur over a period of time resulting in poor performance of the circuit breakers or a complete breakdown. Failure of a circuit breaker to operate under short circuit or overload conditions could result in a poten- tial fire hazard. enough to sit or stand and become entangled. * Make sure electrical toys have been marked with the Canadian Standards Association label.
