4 - Sunday, December 8, 1996 — North Shore News East 8th St. plan meets City to simplify intersection By Deana Lancaster Contributing Writer BEFORE the ink dries On a proposal for the future of-the East 8th Street and Lonsdale intersection, nearby residents vow to battle with the city. Presently, East 11th and East &Sth converge at Lonsdale, at the point where the thoroughfare drops away and turns sharply west and down to the waterfront. “The driving force behind all of this was to simplify that intersection,” said North Vancouver City development planner Bob Spencer. “It’s a very hairy situation, you take your life in your hands every time you cross there.” The city plans entail clos- ing East 8th at Lonsdale and extending the plot of land between 8th and 11th south to cover half of what is now 8th Streer. A small park on the plot will be enlarged slightly and moved out to Lonsdale. A parking lot used by BC Tel employees is to become part of a site for a small two-story commercial “pavilion.” The development could generate enough revenue to pay for the improvements, Spencer said. The proposal has yet to be finalized. BC Tel has not yet agreed to exchange its parking lot for another park- tng area, and no date has been set for a public meeting or hearing on the issue. But residents in the build- ings that back onto 8th read about the proposal in the News and wanted to know more. “If something is going to go on that directly affects the residents shouldn’t they con- tact us directly?” asked Kevin Glassman, who is the proper- ty manager for a building across from the site. He has organized a petition protest- ing the proposal.
