And among the 14 conumnu-
nity groups splitting more than
$78,000 remaining from the
1996 Winter Games operating
budget are some unique grant
recipients.

‘The Winter Games Leyacy
fund was shared aut at a pre-
sentation Monday night at
North Vancouver District Hall
for needs such as facility
improvements, — equipraent
funds, and leadership deveinp-
nent and support,

“It's a good start,” said
David -Moulton, of — the
$10,000 awarded to his youth
mentoring progran. He, along
with Gary Young, director of
recreation for the” Nerth
Vancouver Ree Commission,
are planning to launch the pro-
gram in 1997,

The idea behind — ir,
Moulton said, ts to provide a
tormal framework for the posi-
tive relationships between local
coaches and their young ath-
letes. “Everyone has stories
where they were helped as
teenagers,” Mouiton — said.

“Mentoring is already part of
the coaching process, Burt it's
abways been ad hoc.”
