Sun Peaks Resort undergoes major renovations

early scasons ever, the itch to
get out of the city will still send
thousands of snow-seekers to
weexend ski destinations
‘throughout British Columbia.

And one of the sure-fire destina-
tions treating skiers to fantastic
powder skiing this winter will be the
expanded Sun Peaks Resort, located
just 45 minutes from Kamloops by
Car.

than $30 million has been pumped
~ into the resort, increasing the moun-
». tains’ skiable vertical to over 870 m
' (2,854 ft. — In case that doesn’t
mean miuch to you, Cypress Bowl
has 520m/1,700 ft. vertical). The
resort has also expanded its physical
~ operation, including the new 1,800
- Sq. m (20,600 sq. ft.) Village Day
- Lodge, set to open next month. The
new lodge will include restaurant

facilities and a spacious conference
centre in case you want to mix a lit-
tle business with some snow-
drenched fun out on the resort's 63
runs.

Boarders also tenefit from the
changes Sun Peaks has undergone
for this season. An _ all-new
Snowboard Park, designed by
Ecosign Mountain Planners with
help from some of Canada’s top
shredders, offers snowboarders two
half-pipes (one for rippers, the other

-for beginners). At the bottom of the
925-m (3,000 ft.) boarder run are
handrails, snow-bogged cars, hips,
quarterpipes, burly tabletops, trans-
fers and fat gaps. The whole run is
dedicated to boarders and is ser-
viced by a new quad chair.

Annual snowfall at Sun Peaks is
450 cm (177 ia.), and the resort has
snow-making capabilities to cover
14 hectares (35 acres). The snow-
making facilities have also been
improved for this season, with the
addition of a high-tech system dur-

ing the past summer.

The resort is an ideal place to
take the kids. The mountain has
developed an indoor facility for
youngsters 18 months to 12 years of
age. Also for the kids, and the less
experienced adults. the sheltered
Sundance Ridge run — home of the
Sun Peaks’ ski school — is an ideal
place to spend a day on the slopes.

Another attractive aspect of Sun
Peaks is its proximity to other great
skiing destinations in the Okanagan,
including Apex Alpine, Silver Star
Mountain and Big White. With a lit-
tle planning, and a weck’s vacation,
you could string together an unfor-
gettable week of skiing some of
B.C.'s best skiing terrain.

And of course, there’s always
those ski hills an hour and a half
north of the North Shore on
Highway 99...
