With West Van’s Mark Sager already returned by acclamation, both North Van mayors also held on to their chains of office, though in markedly different cir- cumstances. in North Van City Mayor Jack Loucks was returned with a huge 70% of the vote over his single challenger, former councillor Red Clark. Despite Loucks’ age (75) and years in office (16), voters obviously endorsed his smooth running of an often divided coun- cil which, by and large, has served the city well. Very different was the case in North Van District, where Mayor Murray Dykeman’s competence at centrolling his fractious council was the major issue, even though he is widely liked personally. At the end of the day this latter factor plus the splitting of the op- position between three challengers ~— former council members Paul Turner and Peter Powell, and business woman Umeeda Switle ~— enabled Murray to hold on to the mayor's chair with just under 40% of the vote. With three new councillors — Pam Goldsmith-Jones, Pat Munroe and former six-year District mayor Don Bell — joining incumbents Ernie Crist, Jim Cuthbert and Janice Harris, His Worship may now have an easier job keeping order in the chamber than during his first term. Caution again dominated the North Van City and West Van council elections. In the former, all five incumbents were re- elected, with ambulance paramedic and community worker Darrell Mussatto taking the seat vacated by unsuccessful mayoral candidate Rod Clark. West Van re-elected five of its six council incumbents, the sole casualty — four-term councillor Don Griffiths — being replaced by former B.C. labor minister and’ attorney general Alan Williams. On the school board scene North Van returned four of its 1990-93 incumbents — Margaret Jessup, Chief Philip Joe, Roy Dungey and Pat Heal — while adding useful new talents in the form of an accountant (retired District councillor Rich Buckols), a banker (Guy Heywood) and a university lecturer (Barb MacLellan). West Van School Board, plagued by the Sentinel funding HITHER AND YON scandal and Hillside real estate controversy, retained just two in- _ cumbents — Jean Ferguson and Barbara Howard. Fresh blood personified by lawyer Clif? Bird, - university professor Ken Haycock and Price Waterhouse director Michael MacDougall may help restore public respect.; - . Overall, however, with voter. turnouts ranging from 18.9% in North Van City to 28% in West Van, it was hardly civic democracy’s finest hour. 4 eeoo WRAP-UP: Wanna get up-to- ° date about the Lions Gate cross- ing?
