Farewell, Louise Aird BRIGHT LIGHTS WENTY-FOUR ladies gathered at the Georgia Club for the June 10 goodbye luncheon for West Van's Shesh Aan- dahl. Our hostess, Aline Dobrzensky, provided a lovely party, inviting Shesh’s best friends and decora- ting the table with ribbons, hand- painted papier mache boxes, silver platters heaped with strawberries, pink-budded rose bush branches and Irish crystal baubles. Among the guests were North Van's Marjorie Dolan, West Van‘s Suzanna MacKenna and Heidi von Pfetten, plus Joan Carlisle- Irving (who's single again, guys) and Aline and her sister Patricia’s sister-in-law-to-be Jane Kenneally, a Texan who met Mark Galvin in Ireland. They will marry at ‘a huge wedding,” according to Patricia, at the family seat in treland’s County Wicklow in fuly. Across from me was Black and White Ball founder Lele Mathisen, who's taking a break from the board of the Vancotiver Museum — she expects a baby in friend September. (She and husband Chris, who have three girls, hope for a boy and have the name choices down to “Hugh’’ and “Joachim.” | vote for “Hugh.” To my left was Cartier’s Ani Feuermann, who was on her way to New Orleans to get ideas for her next themed fundraiser. And to my right was the charming Mercedes Marquez, daughter of the Philippines’ former am- bassador to Japan — where she met Shesh — and niece of a former Philippines vice-president — whose name no one could quite recall at the moment... As for Shesh ... she was born here and raised in Japan — her fa- ther moved the family there to work with Second World War or- phans. After getting her MBA from UBC, Shesh married Loren Aan- dahl, a planner for Canadian Airlines (and a Norwegian raised in Taiwan). And Loren recently became head of planning at Northwest Airlines and its head of- fice is in Minneapolis, so there they go. Too bad. Shesh is a true role model. Aside from the looks and the wardrobe, she’s a warm, car- ing person, a generous (and discreet) philanthropist, an eager volunteer, a fabutous mother to three perfect children, she has a great marriage — and she’s one of B.C.'s most successful businesswomen (she’s a devel- oper). Enough to make you sick, huh? She never brags about anything, however — all that’s obvious about Shesh is her energy, integri- ty and her eternally optimistic spirit. She’s a great friend, and we will all miss her. This sounds like a eulogy. Shesh will visit often, for business and to keep up socially — plus her fami- ly’s here. Although the Aandahl home in Minneapolis sounds lovely, there’s one thing Shesh simply will not go without — the view from her Brit- ish Properties home. Ever the pragmatist, Shesh commissioned West Van artist Daniel Izzard to paint her view, and the 40’'x 50°’ painting wilt hang on her new living room wall until she comes back to the real thing. kk«* June 13 marked the first time in my life — but I'm only 19 — that} had io rent something to wear to a party. Christina Mazzone. i wasn’t the only one who did some research before dressing. There were major ’20s dresses there — sequins and tassels, beads and rhinestones and bangles ev- erywhere — and not all rented. Some of us went for the ‘20s makeup (powder-white faces, black eye-shadow, tons of red lipstick) and severai women wore pin-curls and gel-flattened bobs. The men? Tuxedos. The Pacific Palisades Hotel gen- erously gave the Mazzone sisters its whole ground floor, to the disappointment of passers-by who’ wanted to come in and hear Renee Doruyter and the Jazzma- nian Devils — the music was ex- cellent. So was the food — buffet hors d'oeuvres “designed” by North Van fashion designer Fyzal Virani, who did art direction for the event, which included a Funny Money Prohibition Era-type Casi-. no. : - This was the Mazzone sisters’ first fundraiser, and it was an ex- cellent party. | would make two suggestions — the tap dance per- formances were good, but they broke the paity’s flow, and!" would, if ! were them, expand the guest list. - ‘ Next year, the Mazzones will do ” _ 4 party featuring another era — perhaps they'll go for Baroque?- .
