20 — Wednesday, June 17, 1992 ~ North Shore News SPORTS Two high school athletes complete careers in style Bell and Leishman shine at Swangard ERIN BELL of West Van- couver and James Leishman, competing for the final time in their il- lustrious high school track and field careers, were the stars of the 26th annual B.C. championships at Swangard Stadium May 29 and 30. Beil .won the 100m hurdles in 14.55, and ran a strong leg on the 4xi00m relay with Colette Kime, Lynn Scrivener and Heidi Granger that picked up a second in 49.89. Bell also took the triple jump with a leap of 11.23m and then captured the very last event of the day, the long jump at 5.39m, to vault the Highlanders into second place in the girls’ team standings just two points behind Burnaby ~ Central. Bell was selected the meet’s most inspirational athlete. Meanwhile, Leishman was earn- ing the most outstanding male athlete award with a B.C. meet record of 53.49 in the 400m hur- dles, an impressive 1.11 seconds faster than the old mark. He also won the 1:0m_ hurdles in 15.36 and ran on Handsworth’s third-place 4x400m relay with Rob Ferguson, Carson Dorward and Bryan Jeffery which clocked 3:25.98. The Royals came third in HIGH SCHOOL . SPORTS the boys’ team standings. In the overal! team standings, West Van finished fourth with 69 points and Handsworth fifth with 62 behind top-place Queen Elizabeth of Surrey. Jeffery, also competing for the last time as a_ high school trackster, claimed first in the pole vault at 4.30m after passing to 4.05m when there were only two others left in the competition. Handsworth won the girls’ 4x400m relay for an incredible third year in a row and the fifth time since 1981 as Melissa Hall, Alexis Walton, Yvonne Passmore and Aly Paterson circled the track in 4:02.43. They'll be going for it again next year as Passmore who also had a sixth in the 3,000m with 10:38.55 is now in Grade 11, Hall and Paterson in Grade 10 and Walton is in Grade 9. Jerome Pathon of Carson Graham leaped 6.66m on his first try and later fouled on an attempt that might otherwise have broken the meet record to come second in the long jump.
