North Shore residents can help keep the blood bank stocked by attending a clinic on Monday, Sept. 16 or Tuesday, Sept. 17 at Lions Gate Hospital, 200 East 15th St. in North Vancouver. The clinic will be held in the gym- nasium of the hospital’s Medical Day Centre from 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Lifchus pointed out that the Red Cross needs blood to meet the demands of British Columbia hospitals. “‘This year we know that more than 15,000 new blood donors will be needed in B.C. There’s never been a better time io become a blood donor, and to encourage your friends and co-workers to also donate.’’ Lifchus said a person may do- nate blood if he or she is in good health, between the ages of 17 and 71 (first-time donors are restricted at age 60) and weigh more than 45.3 kg (100 pounds). Donors should not be on any medication; however, there are a few excep- tions to this rule. Lifchus advises donors to have a substantial meal within four hours of coming to the clinic and to allow an hour for the donation process. Donors are asked to br- ing their blood donor card. First- time donors must provide iden- tification. The average person has between 4,500 and 5,000 mL (10 to 12 pints) of blood in his body. The Red Cross needs only 450 mL (ene pint, which is quickly replaced by the body with no ill effects. For more information cail 877- 7810.
