The Vaughn Brothers — Family Style, CBS Records 1996 Stevie Ray Vaughn’s untimely death last year stilled a guitar great. But the attraction of Family Style is that it shows Vaughn’s abilities went beyond the flash and dazzle. Quite fittingly as a coda, his last release is not a showcase but a first-time collaboration with brother Jimmie Vaughn, a foun- ding member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Family Style is an uncluttered, straight-ahead serving of Texas boogie and blues. The opener, Hard To Be pushes hard with horns and classic thythm and blues fervor. On the instrumental side, guitars are lock-step slaves to the groove, working the equation of less is better. The brothers obviously had a good time recording this one. theatre MICHAEL BECKER record review Thank fate for this posthumous celebration by two brothers and their guitars. Sting — The Soul Cages, A&M Records 1991 tn short form, the media buzz being whipped up for Soul Cages by Sting and his handlers goes something like this: Artist has nothing much to say. Overcomes writer's block by returning home and dealing with unresolved business with the ghost of his fa- ther. Sting recorded dozens of tunes before paring down to the nine cuts on the disc. He discarded the stuff that had even the whiff of world-beat about it. The result is melodically coher- ent progression, firmly rooted in the British Isles with the help of Kathryn Tickell on Northumbrian pipes. All This Time is the most Police- like tune he’s recorded for some time. But mostly the songs are brooding meditations on heady matters of spirit, destiny and per- sonal myth. The 8-52's — Party Mix/ Mesopotamia, Warner Bros. Records 1991 The ultimate preppy-yuppie’s party band strikes again with a quick cash-in rehashing of a box ’o blasts from the past. We're talking basic remixes of wiggly songs like Party Out Of Bounds, Dance This Mess Around, Throw That Beat In The Garbage Can and much, much more. Beyond the shrill Party Mix! side, itis the Mesopotamia music that moves through more interesting territory. David Byrne’s produc- uion ternpers the shrillness and fits the B-52’s groove with a keen cover of cool. The release is better than a “best of’’ but falls short of the potential pleasure of hearing something new from the band. Speed ‘up Speed-the-Plow EAR, OH dear. Was Wit just a flat audience fae” at last Thursday night’s performance of The Arts Club Theatre’s Speed- the-Plow or is there some- thing seriously flawed about this show? Ther 2 certainly was very little energy in the air in the opening scene which churned laboriously, despite Jay Brazeau’s flailing arms BARBARA: theatre review and agitated spirit. And was my theatre partner’s head slumping forward or was that my imagina- tion? The show is about two Hollywoad film sharks, Bobby Gould (Jlackson Davies) and Charlie Fox (Jay Brazeau), with lit- Ue respect for quality content in films and lots of respect for the almighty buck. Weirdly, the play itself was low on content. At in- termission | felt | had nothing in- vested in the show or in the char- acters to warrant coming back, but optimism prevailed.
