g a e N. Shore drivers are ‘careless’ Open letter to all people possess- ing a driver's licence: In a recent Inquiring Reporter in the News, the question was ‘Is the North Shore a safe place to drive?"’ I say no. Drivers are becoming more and more careless, causing accidents involving other motorists and pedestrians. MAILBOX The day after the Horseshoe Bay accident, while walking to work, | was struck by a truck roll- ing through a stop sign. The driver’s excuse was that he had looked both ways and hadn't seen any cars coming. The fact is that he ignored the stop sign and in doing so, he hit a pedestrian. Luckily I wasn't seriously in- jured and unfortunately | didn't get his name and licence plate Parkway problem can be solved with shears Dear Editor: Re: Junction of Mt. Seymour Parkway and Berkley. I am appalled to read a report (North Shore News, Aug. 15) suggesting that the Nerth Van- couver District Council received professional advice implying that the sight lines and visibility at the junction are ‘‘very good’? and “not a major problem’’ respec- tively. Each day, as } pause in the tur- ning bay waiting for a gap in on- coming traffic in order to turn onto Berkley, | am again moved by the sight of the flowers and yellow ribbon commemorating victims of the recent tragic traffic accident. My eyes switch instinctively eastward to the spot where the approach of westbound vehicles, DRAPERIES particularly those in the outside lane, is partially obscured by shrubs in the central reservation. In some circumstances oncoming vehicles are hidden to the extent that their head lights disappear. You can readily imagine the safety problem that this creates at night. The simple problem — how can this junction easily be made safer? — has an equally simple answer. It is not the installation of traffic lights nor the imposition of new speed limits but merely a couple of hours of hard work with a pair of sharp garden shears. If the district doesn’t tackle the problem soon I might just get frustrated enough to cut it back myself! Neil 1. McDonatd North Vancouver BY S.
