8 ~ Wednesday, August 9, 3989 - North Shore News TRAFFIC, LITTER, CHARACTER CONSIDERED WV Council turns down Me THOUGH PROMOTED as a2 way of relieving traffic and parking congestion in the area, the propos- ed drive-thru facility for the McDonald’s Restaurant at 1455 Marine Drive has been deemed unacceptable for West Vancouver. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer “1 don’t think West Van- couverites are into drive-in restau- rants,"* said Ald. Andy Danyliu at the Monday meeting of West Van- couver District Council. More likely clients would be the people who do the renovation work in the homes of West Van- couverites, Danyliu suggested. He said he thought the number of cars (71 per hour in one case, 93 per hour iu another) that other McDonald's drive-thru facilities accommodate in the Lower Mainland was frightening. “Do we want 71 or 93 cars an hour thrown out into Clyde Shoes for the new school year are here! And yet it was this capacity that local McDonald’s owner/operator Malcolm Kerr maintained would help solve the ongoing congestion and limited parking in the area. To alleviate concerns that the scheme went agains: the ‘‘village’’ character being of Ambleside, Kerr said the drive-thru building would have an attractive tudor type design that would be com- plemented by landscaping and new lighting. NORTH VANCOUVER |_| Lougheed Mail Lougheed ang Austin Ad. Burnaby 421-1223 Kerr also maintained that the McDonald’s would become a quieter area, with less slamming of doors and ignition noises. Speedbumps and a_ controlled pedestrian access were suggested as ways of alleviating concerns from the fire and police depart- ment that the drive-thru area would prove dangerous to people on foot — particularly children. The restaurant provides plenty of litter barrels and picks up trash within a one block radius, but Ald. onald’s drive-thru Rod Day was concerned that drive-thru traffic would lead to a further litter problem. ‘‘What’s to stop the drivers from throwing all their paper goods in the streets. You can't chase them down to 22nd,"" com- mented Day. Ald. Sager failed to obtain a seconder for his motion to refer the matter to the General Services Committee, after which council voted against approval of the drive-thru scheme. 104th Avenue and 152nd Street Surrey 598-2242 HOURS: Mon to Fn Wed Thurs & Fr. 9:30 a.m.-9:30 pm.
